Filming the ‘Fuhrer’s birthday “: Walter Frentz (right front) is filming at a weapons demonstration for Hitler’s birthday on 20 April 1944. “This man should make my images” Hitler should have said about Frentz. The camera man even told constantly that he had been selected only because of his height as 1.94 meters Filmbericherstatter for the Fuehrer’s headquarters.
The unusual photograph shows Hitler in a circle of officers, mostly members of the Air Force, on 4 April 1944 in the Great Hall of the Berghof. The soldiers had been brought to the medal ceremony from the front. Banned they focus their attention on Hitler - probably expecting to learn from their commander in chief, as he intended to get the increasingly catastrophic military situation under control. At Frentz ‘duties included that of religious ceremonies to be documented by the “leader” for the newsreel.
